Don't Fall Victim to the Dangers of Online Dating: Stay Safe and Secure!
There are a lot of people in the personal dating scene in Sydney who have spent countless hours online or wasting time using the dozens of dating apps that promise results, but never seem to deliver.
As well as the frustrating loss of time and chasing dead ends to disappointment, online dating is fraught with deception and often leading the unwary into unsafe situations.
The dangers of online dating are well documented, including a recent editorial and special report that was published on October 4 by The Sydney Daily Telegraph.
The theme of the report revolves around the sort of online dating that was not romantic and instead focused on the dangers that presented themselves through harassment, stalking, inappropriate pictures being posted and other unsavoury activities.
And they were not talking about isolated instances.
Around 10,000 people across all age groups who have used online dating reported experiences that range from being the victims of criminal activity of a sexual nature to having their drinks interfered with and even worse outcomes such as abuse and being forced to perform sexual acts.
The report also referenced the Australian Institute of Criminology which had undertaken this first type of survey nationally that uncovered the fact that three in four users of dating apps have been the subject of online sexual violence.
The survey comprised participants of whom more than one-third were from New South Wales and that revealed a huge level of sexual violence is a common experience.
The major percentage of dating app users who were victims of sexual violence said the perpetrator was person who they met online.
Topping the list of reported offences was sexual harassment, followed closely by followed by abusive threatening language, sexual abuse through published images, and non -consensual stalking and filming.
Perhaps more telling is the correlation between the increased use of mobile dating apps in the past ten years with the number of users experiencing sexual aggression violence and harassment.
